By the time of the last of the four Vane annual events, limits were introduced to limit the timescale for exhibitions and participation was restricted to regionally based artists with a view to creating a more cohesive presentation. This resulted in a smaller number of exhibitions and events (just under sixty) and participants (just over 150) than the previous year, but the greater control resulted in the first phase of Vane’s activity ending on a high point. It also coincided with the ‘LMN’ project in Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle, which grew from the dialogue started between artists in the three cities the previous year, the Newcastle leg of which involved artists from Liverpool and Manchester exhibiting in the ‘Inferno’ exhibition in Newcastle during ‘Vane2000’.
Artist and curator Graham Parker reflects on the growth of collaborative artists’ practice and groups during the late nineties in Manchester.
