Paul W Mulvihill, Mesh, 2002, video and mechanical elements, ‘Memento’ postcard

Paul W Mulvihill’s work combines computers and automated mechanisms. Whether commercially manufactured or self-built, the personal computer usually becomes the lesser aspect of the work, allowing the mechanism to become the focus. For example, in Mesh (2002), computer-generated cogs appear to be driven by – or driving – a real cog; both elements carefully articulated to appear interdependent. A postgraduate of Northumbria University, his exhibitions include ‘Nature selected them for extinction’, a Disco group exhibition at Charlton Bonds Building, Newcastle upon Tyne (2002) and ‘Everything is Number’ at Site Gallery, Sheffield (2001). For ‘Memento’, he produced a limited edition screen saver on CD.
